Forest and Bird is the voice for Nature. Bird of the Year is an annual election-based competition run by Forest & Bird to elect a "Bird of the Year" in New Zealand.

Why does Forest & Bird run Bird of the Year?
Raising Awareness
New Zealand’s birds are amazing! Tragically, many species are in danger of becoming extinct, so they need all the recognition they can get.
Bird of the Year helps to raise awareness for New Zealand’s birds, in the hope of inspiring people to take action to protect our incredible native birds and the places they live. We can work together to protect our birds by taking care of our environment, forests and oceans, and controlling pest species.
When we care for our birds, we care for our communities. When our rivers, forests, and oceans are healthy, both birds and people will thrive!
Our amazing birds need your help.
Bird of the Year celebrates our unique birds and each vote you make, helps give our New Zealand birds a voice.
Show your love for birds by voting in Bird of the Year and supporting Forest & Bird.

Fundraising
Bird of the Year is also a fundraiser for Forest & Bird. Forest & Bird is an independent conservation charity that relies on donations to protect and restore nature.

When is Bird of the Century 2023?
Voting for this year's competition opens at 9am on Monday 30 October and closes 5pm on Sunday 12 November.
The winner will be announced on Monday 13 November.

How many people participate?
The Bird of the Year competition is a popular annual event and attracts over 50,000 votes and 80,000 website visits each year. That’s a lot of attention for our threatened native birds!
